Ghana has announced a major shift toward digitising all government payment systems, signalling a nationwide move to strengthen transparency, curb financial risks, and boost efficiency in managing public funds.
The announcement was made by Controller and Accountant-General Kwasi Agyei on Thursday, during a consultative meeting in Accra with Managing Directors of commercial banks.
The engagement focused on preparations for the rollout of the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS) and the GhIPSS Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) platform.
Mr. Agyei highlighted longstanding challenges caused by the continued use of manual cheques within Ministries, Departments, Agencies (MDAs) and local authorities, practices that expose government finances to fraud risks, complicate reconciliation, and slow down operations.
He stressed that eliminating manual cheques is critical to safeguarding public resources and improving accountability.
The Controller and Accountant-General’s Department (CAGD) noted that sensitisation and training programmes for government institutions would intensify ahead of the full migration.
