Ghana to Launch Chip-Embedded Biometric Passports

The Government of Ghana has announced it will begin issuing chip-embedded biometric passports on Monday, April 28, 2025.

Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa says the initiative aims to boost passport security, curb the influence of middlemen, and enhance transparency in the application process.

The new passports will feature secure microchips that store biometric data, offering greater protection against identity theft and fraud.

The rollout is part of broader reforms by the Ministry, including 24-hour passport service, courier delivery, e-tracking, and a 30% cut in application fees.

Minister Ablakwa described the reform as a citizen-focused step toward a fully digitized and modernized passport system, ensuring accessible and efficient public service delivery for all Ghanaians.
