Ghana will submit a draft resolution to the United Nations General Assembly on March 25, 2026, seeking to recognize the transatlantic slave trade and the racialized enslavement of Africans as the most serious crime against humanity, according to the Foreign Ministry.
President John Dramani Mahama, designated AU champion for reparations, said the initiative—backed by the African Union—is built on historical accuracy, legal grounding, and unity between Africa and its diaspora. Ghana has consulted blocs including the Non-Aligned Movement, the Group of 77, and CARICOM to build support.
The move is part of a broader push for reparations, including artifact restitution and addressing historical inequalities, with a high-level event on restorative justice planned in New York ahead of the submission.
