Ghana Withdraws High Commissioner to Nigeria Over Primary Election Allegations

President John Dramani Mahama has ordered the immediate recall of Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, following allegations of misconduct linked to internal party primaries.

In a statement released over the weekend, the Presidency confirmed that the decision was taken after claims of vote buying and incitement emerged during the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primaries in the Ayawaso East constituency, where Baba Jamal contested as a candidate.

The President, in a directive to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, emphasized that while similar accusations were raised against other aspirants, Baba Jamal was the only contender who was serving in an official state capacity at the time.

This, he noted, raised concerns about compliance with the standards expected of public office holders.

President Mahama also acknowledged the NDC’s announcement that it has begun its own internal investigations into the allegations surrounding the primaries.

However, he stressed that the recall decision was taken independently of party processes and was aimed at upholding the integrity of the public service and preventing any perception of conflict with the Government Code of Conduct.

The recall takes immediate effect, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been instructed to carry out all necessary diplomatic and administrative steps to enforce the directive.

The statement was signed by the President’s Spokesperson and Minister of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu.
