Ghana’s Government Sets Up Mediation Committee to Resolve Savannah Region Conflict

The Ghanaian government has inaugurated a seven-member mediation committee with a one-month mandate to address the Gbenyiri land conflict in the Savannah Region.

The clashes, which erupted on August 23 in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District, spread to nearby villages, claiming several lives, destroying property, and displacing over 50,000 people.

Interior Minister Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka said the committee, formed on the directive of the National Security Council, reflects government’s commitment to restoring peace, security, and social cohesion.

Chaired by Emmanuel Habuka Bombande, the committee’s responsibilities include facilitating the safe return of displaced residents, assessing the conflict’s impact, promoting reconciliation, and recommending long-term peace-building strategies.

Other members include MP Alhaji Collins Dauda, Rev. Father Lazarus Annyere, Dr. Festus Aubyn, Sylvia Hormane Noagbesenu, Prof. Ramatu Alhassan, and Dr. George Amoh, who will serve as secretary.

The committee is expected to deliver its recommendations within a month to guide efforts toward lasting peace in the region.
