Ghana’s Minority MPs Protest Over Unresolved Ablekuma North Parliamentary Results

Members of the Minority Caucus in Parliament on Wednesday staged a protest march to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters of the Ghana Police Service to petition over the unresolved parliamentary election results in the Ablekuma North constituency in the Greater Accra Region.

Nearly six months after the 7 December 2024 general election, the outcome for the constituency remains officially undeclared, despite full voter participation. As a result, residents of Ablekuma North have been left without parliamentary representation since 7 January.

Both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Ewurabena Aubynn, and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Nana Akua Owusu Afriyie have claimed victory in the closely contested race.

The collation process has been plagued by irregularities, including incidents of violence, missing pink sheets, and ongoing legal disputes. The Electoral Commission (EC) suspended the collation exercise in January following discrepancies in results from at least 20 polling stations.

The situation worsened after a fire destroyed some ballot materials stored at the Kwashieman Cluster of Schools.

Presenting the petition on behalf of the Minority, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, MP for Nsawam-Adoagyiri and Minority Chief Whip, called on the police and relevant institutions to expedite investigations into the matter.

The EC has yet to provide a definitive resolution.

Meanwhile, prominent institutions, including the Ghana Bar Association and the Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO), have urged swift action. CODEO has even proposed a rerun of the election if the deadlock remains unresolved.
