Ghana’s President Mahama Concludes AES Tour in Burkina Faso

Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama concluded his three-day tour of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) in Burkina Faso on Monday, focusing on economic and security cooperation.

During his visit, Mahama met with Burkina Faso’s Captain Ibrahim Traoré at the Koulouba Palace, where they discussed strengthening relations, with a focus on energy, aviation, and security.

The Ghanaian president announced plans for a gas pipeline from Accra to Bolgatanga, with a possible extension to Burkina Faso, as well as improved electricity supply. A Ghanaian airline is also considering a direct Accra-Ouagadougou flight to boost connectivity.

On security, Mahama emphasized the need for stronger cooperation against terrorism, calling for joint efforts to address the growing threat in the Sahel.

Trade and the free movement of goods were also key topics, with both leaders agreeing to facilitate the transit of Burkinabe goods through Ghana’s ports.

Mahama’s visit to Ouagadougou marked the final leg of his tour, which also included Mali and Niger.

Throughout the trip, he called for closer ties between ECOWAS and AES as the Sahel bloc moves forward after its departure from ECOWAS in January 2025.
