Following the death of Defence Minister Sadio Camara, Assimi Goïta has assumed direct oversight of the Ministry of Defence in Mali, as the country intensifies its military response to recent attacks.
To support the transition, Oumar Diarra has been appointed as deputy minister, handling day-to-day operations while the head of state personally supervises strategic and operational decisions.
The move comes amid a surge in military activity by the Malian Armed Forces, which report that more than a hundred fighters have been neutralized within a week.
A series of operations have been carried out across multiple regions, including Sévaré in the Mopti region, Kolokani in Koulikoro, Kidal in the north, and areas in Timbuktu and Kita.
According to military sources, these operations have targeted armed group positions, destroyed logistical bases, and intercepted retreating fighters, with equipment also recovered.
Authorities say the operations are part of a broader effort to reassert control and prevent further coordinated attacks.
Meanwhile, General Camara was laid to rest with state honors in Bamako on April 30.
In parallel, a military investigation has been launched into possible internal complicity linked to the April 25 attacks, with arrests reportedly underway.
The army command has indicated that operations will continue nationwide as authorities seek to stabilize the security situation and maintain pressure on armed groups operating across the country.
