Guinea’s bauxite exports rose sharply by 23% year-on-year in the third quarter of 2025, reaching 39.41 million metric tonnes compared to 32 million during the same period last year, according to data from the Ministry of Mines and Geology.
The bulk of the shipments went to China, reaffirming Guinea’s position as the world’s second-largest bauxite producer and a major supplier to China’s aluminum industry.
Despite heavy rains disrupting mine access and slowing port operations, the rebound highlights the country’s resilience amid seasonal and logistical challenges.
The surge comes even as the military-led government tightens control over the sector by revoking licences and urging mining firms to construct domestic alumina refineries.
Regional economic experts estimate annual output could reach around 180 million tonnes, more than 20% above last year’s record. Meanwhile, alumina exports remain modest at just 78,000 tonnes in Q3.
The boost in bauxite shipments coincides with preparations for the first exports from the long-delayed Simandou iron ore project, further strengthening China’s influence over Guinea’s mineral output and reinforcing Conakry’s role in global mineral supply chains.
