Guinea’s Former Defence Minister Convicted of Money Laundering

Guinea’s former defence minister under ex-President Alpha Condé has been sentenced to four years and eight months in prison following an appeal in a corruption case.

The Court for the Repression of Economic and Financial Offences (CRIEF) found Mohamed Diané guilty of illicit enrichment and money laundering in a ruling delivered on October 15, 2026. However, the appeals chamber acquitted him of embezzling public funds.

Diané was also ordered to pay the state 303 billion Guinean francs (about $34 million) in fines and damages.

The ruling reduces his sentence from the five years in prison imposed in December 2024, when he was convicted of embezzlement of public funds, illicit enrichment and money laundering.

Detained since May 2022, Diané is expected to complete his prison term in January 2027.
