Guinea’s transitional government, General Mamadi Doumbouya has officially declared his candidacy for the upcoming presidential election set for December 28, 2025.
On the final day for submissions, Doumbouya, dressed in traditional attire and escorted by his presidential guard, visited the Supreme Court to formalize his bid.
His decision follows months of mounting pressure from supporters who view him as a symbol of stability since he seized power in September 2021.
The announcement has sparked widespread mobilization across Guinea.
Doumbouya’s candidacy comes on the heels of a constitutional referendum in September, where a “Yes” vote led to the adoption of a new constitution enabling the presidential election to move forward.
The updated charter also bars candidates over 80 years old, effectively sidelining several long-time political figures.
