Scores of residents and business owners are reeling from the aftermath of a devastating fire that tore through more than 100 wooden structures at the Tema Heavy Industrial Area late Wednesday night.
The inferno, which began around 11:00 p.m. on June 18, is believed to have started in a kiosk where cooking activities were underway. Eyewitnesses reported that the flames spread rapidly, engulfing nearby makeshift structures and leaving a trail of destruction.
By dawn, little remained of the cluster of wooden dwellings and shops. Residents, many of whom lost their homes and livelihoods, were seen sifting through the rubble in an attempt to salvage any remnants.
While no casualties were reported, the emotional and economic toll is immense. Victims expressed anger and frustration over what they described as a delayed response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the blaze or the full extent of the damage. Investigations are expected to be launched in the coming days.
In the meantime, displaced residents are calling for immediate humanitarian assistance, including shelter, food, and clothing. Many are now left homeless and uncertain about how to rebuild.
