A dispute has erupted between Guinea and Axis Minerals, a Dubai-based company owned by an Indian conglomerate, after the government revoked its bauxite mining permit.
The company, which has operated in the country for more than a decade, learned of the decision on May 14, 2025, when the withdrawal of its license was announced on national television.
Authorities later ordered a suspension of operations at its Boffa mining site and froze its bank accounts.
Conakry has yet to issue a public explanation for the move, which came as part of a sweeping decision that stripped over 100 companies of their mining titles.
In July, Axis Minerals filed arbitration proceedings before the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, arguing that the Guinean government’s actions were illegal and that repeated attempts to seek dialogue have been ignored.
The company, which secured its operating license in 2018 and recently reported daily production of about 169,000 tonnes of bauxite, is now seeking to compel Guinea to participate in the legal process.
