Ivorian Politician Gbagbo Urges Ouattara to Uphold Democracy in Open Letter

Former Ivorian president Laurent Gbagbo has issued an open letter to President Alassane Ouattara, calling on him to safeguard democratic principles in Côte d’ivoire.

In the letter, Gbagbo stressed that it is “not too late” for the government to abandon what he described as a logic of power confiscation.

He urged Ouattara to restore the fundamentals of democracy, including the sovereignty of the people, equality before the law, and the integrity of the ballot box.

Gbagbo’s appeal comes amid heightened political tension ahead of the country’s next elections.

Opposition figures have frequently accused Ouattara’s administration of undermining democratic processes, while the ruling party maintains that it is acting within the law.

The former president, who remains a central figure in Ivorian politics despite his past trial at the International Criminal Court, insisted that the credibility of Côte d’ivoire political future depends on genuine democratic reform.

His intervention is likely to stir fresh debate in Abidjan’s political circles, where questions about electoral fairness and political inclusivity remain at the forefront.
