Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara Outlines New Priorities After Controversial Re-election

Ivory Coast’s President Alassane Ouattara has set out his governing priorities following his disputed October re-election, using his swearing-in ceremony to reaffirm commitments to national unity, stability and economic development after a vote marked by low turnout and unrest.

Ouattara, who secured more than 89 percent of the vote in an election boycotted by major opposition leaders, framed his new mandate as a choice “for stability, peace and development”.

The poll, however, took place amid tensions that left at least 11 people dead and led to more than 1,650 arrests, according to official figures.

During his inauguration address, he realigned and reiterated his policy agenda, pledging to serve “all Ivorians without distinction” and emphasising that his government would prioritise public interest, cohesion and continued economic progress.

He highlighted a commitment to govern with “humility and a sense of duty,” positioning these themes at the core of his fourth term.

Ouattara first assumed office in 2011 following a disputed election that triggered a brief civil conflict. A constitutional reform in 2016 and his 2020 decision to seek another term; arguing that the revised constitution reset his presidential term count, deepened political divisions, with opponents accusing him of consolidating power.

Supporters credit him with revitalising the economy of the world’s largest cocoa producer, while critics argue that political freedoms have narrowed during his tenure. His newly restated priorities will now be closely watched as the country navigates the lingering fallout of the election and prepares for a new political cycle.
