Liberia has achieved a remarkable diplomatic milestone by securing a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for the 2026–2027 term. Standing unopposed in the election, the West African nation required a minimum of 128 votes but received overwhelming support, winning 181 votes during the official ballot at the UN Headquarters in New York.
The announcement was met with celebration back home, where President Joseph N. Boakai, senior government officials, lawmakers, and cabinet ministers gathered at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Monrovia to watch the proceedings live. Foreign Minister Sara Beysolow Nyanti joined the jubilant crowd as the results were broadcast on large screens.
Liberia’s victory followed an extensive and well-coordinated diplomatic campaign that gained the backing of regional blocs, international allies, and individual countries. The effort stood out for its national unity, drawing support from both the ruling party and opposition leaders — a rare moment of bipartisan collaboration.
This significant achievement signals Liberia’s return to a prominent role in global diplomacy and provides the country with a vital platform to contribute to peace and security around the world over the coming two years.
