The Liberian presidency has issued a statement addressing public backlash following controversial comments made by President Joseph Nyuma Boakai during a December 22 address. The remarks, in which President Boakai said, “We want to encourage those who want to remain corrupt and steal money, I beg, the money should be used to bless our people,” ignited criticism from anti-corruption groups and civil society organizations, who viewed them as undermining the fight against systemic corruption.
In its clarification, the Executive Mansion asserted that President Boakai’s words were not an endorsement of corrupt practices but a strong condemnation of corruption.
The presidency emphasized that the statement was a call for public officials to prioritize the welfare of citizens and serve with integrity.
This incident has drawn comparisons to a similar controversy in August 2022, when former Minister of State for Presidential Affairs, Nathaniel McGill, faced backlash over remarks perceived as condoning corruption.
The government has reiterated its commitment to transparency and good governance, urging all public officials to uphold the highest ethical standards in their service to Liberia.
