Mali Deepen Bilateral Ties with US on Security and Economic Cooperation

Mali and the United States are stepping up efforts to strengthen their bilateral relationship, following a high-level meeting in Bamako between Malian Foreign Minister Abdoulaye Diop and a US delegation led by the American Ambassador.

Talks centered on expanding economic opportunities, attracting investments, and fostering cooperation aimed at transforming both countries’ economies.

Minister Diop outlined progress in defending Mali’s territorial integrity, improving defense management, and advancing peace and reconciliation, while the US side expressed strong interest in Mali’s economic development initiatives and reaffirmed support for its sovereignty.

A key topic was the creation of the Confederation of Sahel States (ESA), a geopolitical alliance uniting Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso, which has drawn US attention as a new regional dynamic.

The meeting followed recent visits by senior US officials, including William Stevens, Deputy Assistant Secretary for African Affairs, and Rudy Atallah, Deputy Director for Counterterrorism at the US National Security Council, which boosted discussions on counterterrorism, regional security, and investment in gold and lithium sectors.

Both countries agreed to maintain constructive dialogue focused on practical, mutually beneficial cooperation in security, economic growth, and respect for national sovereignty.
