Mali Suspends Classes Nationwide Amid Fuel Shortages and Transport Disruptions

The Malian government has announced a temporary suspension of classes across all schools and universities starting Monday, October 27, due to severe fuel shortages affecting transportation nationwide.

In a joint statement, the Ministers of National Education and Higher Education and Scientific Research said the suspension will last until Sunday, November 9, 2025, with classes set to resume on Monday, November 10.

According to the ministries, the decision aims to ensure the safety and well-being of students, teachers, and staff as disruptions in fuel supply have made daily travel increasingly difficult. Officials added that adjustments will be made to the academic calendar to maintain educational continuity once classes restart.

Authorities also assured that efforts are underway to stabilize fuel distribution. The shortages stem from a blockade imposed by armed groups on major routes leading to Bamako, particularly the highways connecting the capital to coastal supply ports.

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure confirmed that an emergency response plan has been activated, including logistical and security measures to protect fuel convoys and restore normal supply.

Meanwhile, daily life in Bamako remains heavily affected. Public transport, essential services, and even some government operations have slowed, deepening public frustration as the crisis continues.

Government officials expressed gratitude to educators, students, and families for their patience and sense of civic responsibility during this challenging period.
