Malian Foreign Minister’s Remarks on Modibo Keïta Spark Backlash

Mali’s Foreign Minister, Abdoulaye Diop, has faced strong public backlash following comments he made about the country’s first president, Modibo Keïta, during the Lomé Peace and Security Forum.

Diop’s remarks describing Keïta as a teacher “unprepared to lead a country” were widely interpreted as diminishing the legacy of the nation’s founding leader, sparking outrage across social media and among political figures, historians, and civic groups.

Amid growing criticism, Diop issued a statement clarifying his words, expressing deep respect for Modibo Keïta and emphasizing that his intention was not to undermine the former leader but to highlight the evolution of African leadership.

The controversy, coming shortly after Mali’s 65th independence anniversary, reignited national reflection on Keïta’s enduring influence as the architect of Mali’s sovereignty and a symbol of African unity.
