Malian President Goïta Visits Russia to Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation

Malian Transitional President Assimi Goïta arrived in Moscow on Sunday for an official in a bid to strengthen bilateral coperation.

Welcomed with full state honors and accompanied by a high-level delegation, this marks Goïta’s second visit to Russia following the 2023 Russia-Africa summit.

The visit aims to deepen the growing strategic partnership between Mali and Russia, particularly in military, energy, and economic sectors.

Key discussions include enhanced security cooperation through the Africa Corps—Russia’s new military mission replacing the Wagner Group—and joint energy ventures, notably the Bamako gold refinery project with Russian firm Yadran, in which Mali holds a 62% stake.

The agenda features a private meeting between Goïta and Putin, followed by bilateral talks exploring future collaborations in transport, technical training, and economic development.

This visit signals Mali’s continued shift away from traditional alliances in favor of building a durable geopolitical alignment with Russia.

As Mali seeks greater strategic autonomy, the strengthening of Russian-Malian cooperation stands as a cornerstone of its evolving diplomatic and security policy.
