The Gambia’s former foreign minister, Dr Mamadou Tangara, has officially taken up his post as the African Union’s Special Representative for Mali and the Sahel and Head of the AU Mission for Mali and the Sahel (MISAHEL).
He assumed office on 17 November after presenting his credentials to Mali’s foreign minister, Abdoulaye Diop, during a ceremony in Bamako, where he will be based.
In his remarks, Dr Tangara reaffirmed the African Union’s determination to support Mali through its current political and security challenges, pledging to deepen cooperation with the Malian authorities and uphold the aspirations of the Malian people.
He expressed a personal sense of connection to Mali and emphasised the AU’s readiness to help shape solutions rooted in African-led approaches.
Talks between the two officials also focused on strengthening collaboration between Mali and the AU, particularly in light of shifting regional dynamics and emerging geopolitical realities across the Sahel.
Minister Diop welcomed the new envoy’s engagement, reiterating Mali’s commitment to Pan-African ideals and calling for partnerships grounded in honesty, respect for national context and constructive dialogue.
