Niger Dispatches 82-Tanker Fuel Convoy to Mali Amid Severe Shortages

Niger has dispatched an 82-tanker fuel convoy to Mali, a move that underscores the growing political and economic alignment of the Sahel Alliance as member states push to secure energy independence and regional stability.

The convoy traveled several days along the Niamey-Bamako corridor, a route often affected by insecurity in parts of the shared border zone.

Malian officials confirmed that the shipment was formally handed over to the Minister of Industry and Trade during a ceremony in the capital. The fuel donation is intended to help Mali cope with recurrent shortages, as the country depends almost entirely on imported hydrocarbons for its energy and transport needs.

Niger’s decision to send the convoy underscores the strategic importance of cross-border infrastructure for energy security in the region.

With the Niger-Benin oil pipeline now operational, Niger has strengthened its position as a supplier to neighbouring countries seeking more reliable access to fuel.

Malian authorities say the shipment will ease domestic market tensions in the short term.
