Niger Launches Major Agro-Industrial and Health Projects to Boost Youth Employment

Nigerien Transitional President Abdourahamane Tiani unveiled a series of ambitious development projects on Monday aimed at stimulating youth employment and strengthening the economic infrastructure of southern Niger.

Speaking at a public gathering in Maradi’s traditional wrestling arena, Tiani highlighted initiatives focused on agriculture, industry, and healthcare.

Central to the announcements was the planned construction of a 60 billion CFA franc agro-industrial center in Maradi, designed to enhance agricultural processing and create job opportunities for young people in the region.

The president’s remarks followed a visit to the Jirataoua irrigated area, spanning 1,273 hectares, which this year yielded a moringa harvest of approximately 23,000 tonnes, valued at nearly 2 billion CFA francs over eight months.

Tiani emphasized that the irrigated site alone has the potential to secure food self-sufficiency for Maradi, prompting plans to expand the area alongside the establishment of the agro-industrial facility.

Additional projects include the creation of a dry port and the imminent completion of the Kano-Maradi railway, a cross-border infrastructure expected to enhance trade and economic activity while generating employment for youth.

The president also urged local entrepreneurs to invest in agricultural processing ventures, fostering entrepreneurship and industrial growth in the region.

On the social front, the government intends to construct 15 Integrated Health Centers (CSI) and modernize Maradi’s reference hospital with advanced medical equipment.
