Nigeria and India have formally submitted bids to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, marking the centenary edition of the event.
The development comes as Canada, which staged the first Games in Hamilton in 1930, opted not to enter the race.
Both nations are positioning themselves as major sporting powers, with India also eyeing the 2036 Olympic Games in Ahmedabad.
The bids provide a boost for the Games, which had faced uncertainty after recent withdrawals by hosts due to financial pressures.
The move follows setbacks for the event in recent years, including South Africa’s withdrawal from the 2022 Games and Victoria, Australia pulling out of hosting in 2026.
Scotland’s Glasgow will now host a scaled-down version next year.
Organizers say Nigeria and India’s interest underscores the significance of the Games and their potential to advance national development goals while leaving lasting legacies for local communities.
