A new wave of attacks in northeastern Nigeria has left several soldiers dead, including senior officers, highlighting worsening insecurity in Borno State.
Colonel IA Muhammad was killed in an ambush in Monguno after his convoy struck an improvised explosive device.
The incident follows a major assault in Benisheikh on April 9, where Brigadier General Oseni Braimah died during an attack attributed to Islamic State West Africa Province, a faction linked to Boko Haram.
However, military authorities have strongly disputed casualty figures circulating in the media, describing them as exaggerated and misleading.
The command of Operation HADIN KAI insists that only four personnel were killed in the Benisheikh attack and maintains that troops repelled the assault and retained control of the area.
The army has also warned against the spread of misinformation, as insurgent attacks and information battles continue to shape the conflict in the region.
