Nigeria Lifts Six-Month Emergency Rule in Rivers State as Democratic Governance Restored

Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has announced the suspension of emergency rule in Rivers State, which had been in place for six months.

In a statement released on Wednesday, President Tinubu said that recent intelligence indicated a renewed spirit of understanding and cooperation among all stakeholders in the state.

He described the developments as a “robust readiness and potent enthusiasm” for the immediate return to democratic governance.

President Tinubu called the shift a welcome development for both himself and the nation, highlighting it as a significant step forward for Nigeria’s democratic progress.

Rivers State, an oil-producing region of Nigeria has seen militant attacks targeting oil pipelines for years. A political rift in the state led to the emergency declaration by President Tinubu, who claimed that the measure was necessary to restore peace and order.

During the period of emergency rule, Nigeria’s retired former navy chief Vice Admiral Ibokette Ibas, ruled the state.
