Nigeria Seeks Ghana’s Support for $25 Billion Nigeria-Morocco Gas Pipeline Amid Debt Dispute

The Nigerian government has called on Ghana to support the Nigeria-Morocco gas pipeline project, a $25 billion initiative aimed at linking Nigerian gas supplies to the  markets in the sub region and Europe.

The request was made during a ministerial meeting of the West African Gas Pipeline Committee (WAGPCo) in Accra. However, the discussions took place against the backdrop of a lingering financial dispute over Ghana’s estimated $75 million debt for gas deliveries via the West African Gas Pipeline (WAGP), which has connected Nigeria to Benin, Togo, and Ghana since 2010.

Nigerian Petroleum Minister Ekpo Ekperipe urged Ghana to fully honor its commitments to maintain regional energy stability, noting that Nigeria remains committed to upholding existing supply agreements.

The Nigeria-Morocco pipeline, which would pass through 13 African countries, is considered a strategic extension of the WAGP, aiming to establish a sustainable energy corridor along the Atlantic coast.

Although Accra pledged to pay $37.5 million of its outstanding debt in February, confirmation of the payment is still pending. Nigeria continues to push for regional cooperation to eliminate financial barriers and advance energy integration across the sub region.
