The Government of Nigeria has begun arrangements to evacuate its citizens from South Africa, with at least 130 nationals already registered for voluntary repatriation as anti-foreigner tensions escalate in cities such as Pretoria and Johannesburg.
Announcing the move, Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu said the safety of citizens abroad remains the top priority of President Bola Tinubu.
She noted that more Nigerians are expected to register for evacuation flights, as anxiety grows over protests targeting foreign nationals, including Nigerians.
The minister also confirmed the deaths of two Nigerian citizens in separate incidents allegedly involving security personnel, describing the cases as “utterly condemnable” and demanding justice.
Nigeria has since summoned South Africa’s High Commissioner and called for stronger action from local authorities to protect foreign nationals.
With further demonstrations expected in the coming days, Nigerian diplomatic missions are intensifying coordination with South African authorities to reduce risks.
Abuja also emphasized its historical support for South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle, urging renewed commitment to African solidarity while both countries explore mechanisms to prevent recurring xenophobic violence.
