Governors from Nigeria’s South-West region have renewed their call for the establishment of state-level police forces to address escalating security challenges across the country.
The appeal emerged on Monday in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, southwest region, following a closed-door meeting at the Oyo State Governor’s Office.
During the session, the governors reviewed regional security concerns and devised coordinated strategies to counter rising threats, such as kidnapping, banditry, illegal mining, and unregulated interstate migration.
A major initiative announced was the creation of a South-West Regional Security Fund, designed to bolster the region’s response to insecurity.
The fund will be managed by the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission and overseen by security advisers from all six states.
The governors’ renewed push for state police reflects growing frustration with existing national security arrangements and signals a regional effort to strengthen law enforcement capabilities at the local level.
