Nigerian President Rejects Bill Seeking To Increase Retirement Age Of Legislators

Nigerian President, Bola Tinubu, has rejected a bill seeking to increase the retirement age of legislators by an additional five years.

The existing law prescribes 60 years of age or 35 years of service for the retirement of civil servants.

The President’s decision was contained in a letter sent to the assembly and read on the floor during plenary.

Despite initial rejection by the Senate in February, the bill was reconsidered and passed in concurrence with a similar one passed by the House of Representatives.

Without giving reason to why he withheld his assent, the President commended the Senate for it’s diligence in drafting and passing the bill.

He urged the lawmakers to receive the decision with understanding.
