The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) announced on Monday that it recovered nearly $500 million in proceeds of crime last year and secured over 4,000 criminal convictions, marking its highest success rate since its establishment more than two decades ago.
Nigeria, Africa’s biggest energy producer, has long struggled with systemic corruption, which many citizens blame for widespread poverty. According to the EFCC, some of the recovered funds have been reinvested in government projects.
Besides cash, the agency also seized 931,052 metric tons of petroleum products, 975 real estate properties, and company shares.
Nigeria ranks 140 out of 180 in Transparency International’s latest Corruption Perception Index, reflecting persistent governance challenges despite ongoing anti-corruption efforts.
