Recently reinstated as a lawmaker, Ousmane Sonko was elected president of the National Assembly of Senegal on Tuesday during a plenary session held in Dakar.
The vote, supervised by First Vice-President Ismaïla Diallo, recorded 133 ballots from 133 participating lawmakers, with Sonko securing 132 votes in favor, no votes against and one abstention.
His victory confirms his return to the forefront of Senegal’s institutional leadership amid ongoing political realignments within the country.
The election followed Sonko’s official reinstatement as a member of parliament earlier in the same session, during which he completed the formal procedures to resume his parliamentary mandate and joined the Pastef parliamentary group.
The leadership change comes after the resignation of former National Assembly president El Malick Ndiaye and forms part of a wider restructuring of state institutions.
The development also coincides with the appointment of Ahmadou Al Aminou Mohamed Lo as the country’s new prime minister, as authorities seek to maintain continuity in governance and ongoing reforms.
