The General Staff of the Chadian Armed Forces has confirmed that 23 soldiers were killed and 26 wounded following a deadly attack by Boko Haram on the night of May 4 at a military position on Barka Tolorom Island, in the Lake Chad province.
According to a statement signed by Brigadier General Chanane Issakha Acheikh, the हमला occurred around 10 p.m., prompting a swift and forceful counteroffensive by defense and security forces, who managed to repel the attackers, neutralize several fighters, and recover equipment.
Military operations are still ongoing in the area, with authorities indicating that a final casualty toll will be released later.
Despite the heavy losses, authorities say the situation is under control, reaffirming their commitment to combating terrorism. Earlier, Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno paid tribute to the fallen soldiers, describing them as “heroes” whose sacrifice would not be in vain.
The Lake Chad region—bordering Nigeria, Niger, and Cameroon—remains one of the most volatile zones in Central Africa, frequently targeted by extremist groups. As a key contributor to the Multinational Joint Task Force, Chad continues to bear significant human and operational costs in the fight against insurgency.
