Parallel Mobilizations Emerge Within Senegal’s Presidential Camp

Political activity within the ruling camp in Senegal is showing two parallel dynamics as President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko each engage their respective political allies.

After meeting members of the Diomaye Président coalition, President Faye reaffirmed his commitment to the parties that supported his 2024 candidacy, saying the coalition would remain central to the exercise of power.

Meanwhile, Sonko held a closed-door meeting with leaders of the APTE – Patriotic Alliance for Work and Ethics coalition. He described the discussions as “fruitful and constructive” and announced that the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity (PASTEF) National Council would soon convene under his leadership.

The dual mobilization dates back to late 2025 when differing approaches emerged over restructuring the Diomaye Président coalition. President Faye entrusted the process to Aminata Touré, while PASTEF leaders supported a separate restructuring initiative coordinated by Aïssatou Mbodj under the APTE framework.

These political alignments come as Senegal prepares for local elections in 2027, widely viewed as a key test ahead of the 2029 presidential election.

Despite these parallel political movements, both Sonko and Faye have repeatedly emphasized their commitment to working together within their respective roles in government.
