President Mahama Appoints Paul Baffoe-Bonnie as Ghana’s Next Chief Justice

Ghana’s President John Mahama has formally nominated Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie to assume the country’s top judicial position.

In a letter to the Council of State, the President requested its advice on the appointment, emphasising Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s long service and distinguished career on the Bench.

A statement from the Presidency praised him as a jurist who has demonstrated diligence, integrity, and an unwavering commitment to justice. He is widely respected within the legal community for his intellect, impartiality, and contributions to the evolution of Ghanaian law.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has been serving in an acting capacity since April 2025, following the suspension and subsequent removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. Her dismissal stemmed from findings of a constitutional committee established under Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution, which cited misconduct.

As the most senior member of Ghana’s Supreme Court, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s nomination is being positioned as a choice grounded in experience and continuity for the judiciary.
