Senegalese President Diomaye Faye is attending the Ninth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 9) in Yokohama, where he met with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba to deepen bilateral ties.
Discussions focused on key areas including training, health, water, fisheries, and security, with President Faye stressing the importance of human resource development as a driver of progress.
An agreement will soon be signed for the construction of an annex to the Senegal-Japan Vocational and Technical Training Center in Diamniadio, alongside other cooperation deals expected in the coming days.
The meeting builds on recent diplomatic exchanges marking 65 years of relations between the two countries.
In April, Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya visited Dakar to reinforce economic and political cooperation, support preparations for the Dakar 2026 Youth Olympic Games, and highlight Japan’s role in Senegal’s “Senegal 2050” development vision.
Both sides also reaffirmed plans to expand collaboration in education, agriculture, mine clearance, and industrial growth, while addressing broader international concerns such as Sahel security, East Asian tensions, and United Nations reform.
