Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has appointed Magistrate Ousmane Diagne as President of the Constitutional Council, replacing the late Mamadou Badio Camara.
The appointment, announced on July 13, 2026, places a senior judicial figure at the head of the institution responsible for reviewing the constitutionality of laws, resolving electoral disputes and overseeing the regularity of elections.
Diagne, a career magistrate, previously served as Attorney General at the Dakar Court of Appeal, First Advocate General at the Supreme Court, and Minister of Justice before joining the Constitutional Council.
His appointment comes days after the Constitutional Council annulled a constitutional amendment adopted by the National Assembly, ruling that the procedure violated constitutional requirements.
The decision, which halted a reform supported by the parliamentary majority led by Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, further highlighted the importance of the court in Senegal’s political landscape.
Under Diagne’s leadership, the Constitutional Council begins a new phase amid ongoing debates over institutional reforms and constitutional governance.
