Senegal bid farewell to one of its beloved athletes on Sunday, 18 May, as hundreds gathered at the Ouakam cemetery to honour the life of Fadiouf Ndiaye, captain of the Union Sportive de Ouakam (USO), who died following a tragic on-pitch collapse.
The 28-year-old central defender fell to the ground in visible distress during the final moments of the first half in a league match against Oslo FA on Saturday, 17 May. Witnesses reported that Ndiaye had just come into contact with another player when he began experiencing intense pain.
Despite being rushed to the hospital, he tragically passed away en route. The club’s medical team confirmed that Ndiaye had no known prior health issues.
Though US Ouakam went on to win the match 2–0, the victory was rendered hollow by the devastating loss of their captain.
A statement released by the club described Ndiaye as “a disciplined player and a true warrior,” highlighting his deep commitment to the team and his pride in representing his community.
Senegal’s Minister of Youth, Sports and Culture, Khady Diene Gaye, expressed heartfelt condolences, stating, “National football has lost one of its pillars. May Allah welcome him into His paradise, Firdawsi.”
