Senegal Records Surge in Sheep Supply Ahead of Tabaski Festival

Senegal is witnessing a significant increase in sheep supply ahead of the Tabaski celebration, with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty and Livestock (MASAE) reporting that 584,418 sheep had already entered the national market as of May 15, 2026, compared to 547,997 during the same period in 2025.

During a visit to Medina Ndiathbé in the Saint-Louis region, Livestock Minister Dr. Mabouba Diagne described the trend as a “strong dynamic” in livestock arrivals, noting that more than 249,000 sheep had already passed through the area just 12 days before Tabaski, surpassing the total of 178,000 recorded there throughout 2025.

The government says measures have been intensified to stabilize prices and support livestock traders.

Through the Livestock and Meat Price Stabilization Fund (FONSTAB), more than 223 million FCFA has been financed in the Podor department this year, compared to 103 million FCFA in 2025. Authorities have also distributed 80 tonnes of subsidized livestock feed to support breeders and transporters.

National demand for Tabaski is estimated at nearly 900,000 sheep, and the government says efforts are ongoing to ensure sufficient supply across the country ahead of the Muslim festival.
