Senegal to Slash Imported Food Costs with €134 Million Deal with Italian Firm

The Senegalese Government has signed a €134 million Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Italian company Bonifiche Ferraresi International to revolutionise its agricultural sector.

In a statement shared on Facebook, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Sovereignty, and Livestock highlighted that the partnership is part of the Diomaye Plan for Casamance. The plan seeks to transform the Sédhiou region in southern Senegal into a thriving integrated agricultural hub.

During the signing ceremony, Minister Dr Mabouba Diagne explained that the project will cover over 10,000 hectares, focusing on developing agriculture, livestock farming, and fish farming.

Dr Diagne noted that the collaboration, which begins immediately, is crucial for reducing the 1,070 billion CFA francs Senegal spends annually on food imports.

The project will also bring significant benefits, including job creation for youth and women, the establishment of Community Agricultural Cooperatives (CACs), and the development of socio-economic infrastructure for local communities, among others.
