More than a dozen people were killed in northeast Nigeria’s Bauchi State after suspected bandits ambushed a local security patrol and rustled livestock in the early hours of Sunday.
According to a statement from the Bauchi police command released on Monday, the attack occurred in the Gwana district of Alkaleri local government area, where both vigilante members and fleeing civilians from a nearby village were killed during the assault.
The police said tactical teams were dispatched to the scene and recovered several bodies.
Eyewitness accounts confirm that a heavy gun battle broke out between the local security patrol and the attackers, leading to multiple casualties.
The armed group, described as bandits, successfully overpowered the local vigilantes and made away with a large number of cattle and sheep.
The incident adds to the ongoing insecurity across northern Nigeria, where bandit groups continue to carry out deadly raids and mass kidnappings.
