Two nationals from the United Arab Emirates who were abducted near Mali’s capital in late September have been freed after more than four weeks in captivity, following discreet negotiations in the country’s volatile north.
Sources close to the mediation confirmed that the pair were released in the city of Gao on October 30, ending a month-long ordeal that drew concern amid a resurgence of kidnappings across the Sahel. The operation reportedly also secured the freedom of an Iranian hostage.
Although neither the Malian government nor Emirati authorities have issued official statements, international outlets reported that the hostages’ release was facilitated through indirect talks and involved a financial settlement estimated at around $50 million.
After their release, the two Emiratis were transferred to Abu Dhabi, where they were received by state officials.
