Ousmane Sonko has been dismissed from his position as Prime Minister of Senegal, following escalating tensions within the country’s top leadership.
The decision highlights a growing political divide between Sonko and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, despite their earlier close alliance within PASTEF that helped shape the 2024 political transition.
Their partnership, once seen as a symbol of unity, gradually weakened as disagreements emerged over governance and the internal direction of the ruling coalition.
The rift deepened in 2025 and 2026 as competing political blocs formed within the majority and differences over state management became more visible.
A key turning point came during a parliamentary session when Sonko publicly challenged the president over the handling of political funds, intensifying tensions between the two sides.
Despite attempts by President Faye to assert constitutional authority and maintain stability, the disagreement ultimately led to Sonko’s removal from office and the dissolution of the government.
