Africa Adopts Water Policy Vision 2063 at AMCOW Session in Dakar

Africa has finalized and adopted the African Water Policy Vision 2063, a landmark framework designed to transform water governance across the continent.

The strategic document, endorsed at the 14th session of the African Ministers’ Council on Water (AMCOW) in Dakar, outlines integrated resource management, technological innovation, and financial self-reliance as key pillars for placing water at the center of economic and social development.

The adoption follows years of preparation, with Senegal playing a decisive role in shaping the final text.

The Dakar session gathered nearly 30 participants, including 17 ministers, marking one of the council’s strongest turnouts. Alongside approving the water vision, ministers also agreed to strengthen AMCOW’s institutional capacity through increased member contributions.

The document will now be forwarded to the African Union and later submitted to the Summit of Heads of State for final endorsement.

Senegal’s leadership in water diplomacy was also underlined, with the country set to co-host the 2026 UN Water Conference with the United Arab Emirates, preceded by a high-level preparatory meeting in Dakar early next year.
