Burkinabe Government Dissolves Electoral Commission in Cost-Cutting Reform

The government of Burkina Faso has dissolved the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI) following a decree adopted during Wednesday’s Council of Ministers meeting.

The decision transfers all electoral responsibilities back to the Ministry of Territorial Administration, marking a return to the previous system and aligning with broader institutional reforms under the transitional government.

Minister of State for Territorial Administration and Mobility, Emile Zerbo, said the move is aimed at restoring state authority and reducing operational costs, as CENI received nearly half a billion CFA francs ($888,099) annually in subsidies.

He added that maintaining the commission contradicted the Transition Charter. Since Captain Ibrahim Traoré assumed power in September 2022, Burkina Faso has launched a series of structural reforms across multiple sectors to reshape governance and streamline state functions.
