The Burkinabe military post attack has been claimed by Al Qaeda affiliate JNIM, in which the group said 60 soldiers were killed.
The U.S.-based non-governmental organization SITE Intelligence, which monitors online activity of Islamist militants, reported that JNIM posted messages on Monday and Tuesday taking responsibility for four separate assaults in Burkina Faso and Mali.
Among them was a deadly raid in the town of Sole targeting a military post, though SITE did not specify the exact day it occurred. Another attack in eastern Gnagna province reportedly left 10 members of the pro-government militia VDP dead.
The wave of violence underlines the ongoing struggle military-led governments in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger face in containing jihadist insurgencies.
In a separate message, SITE said the JNIM leader in Burkina Faso, Ousmane Dicko, appeared in a video urging civilians in Djibo to evacuate for their safety.
On Sunday, an army base in Djibo, along with a police station and market, came under attack in an intense assault involving hundreds of fighters.
Media reported the deaths of dozens of soldiers and civilians, the seizure of military equipment, and widespread destruction.
Videos shared online Wednesday showed armed insurgents moving through Diapaga, a town near the borders with Niger and Mali. Burkina Faso’s authorities have not yet issued any public statement regarding the latest attacks.
