Chad’s Parliament Extends Presidential Term from Five to Seven Years

Chad’s National Assembly has voted in favor of constitutional reforms that extend the presidential term from five to seven years, renewable, while increasing the mandate of deputies to six years to align electoral timelines.

The reform also creates the post of Deputy Prime Minister to enhance government coordination, introduces public financing of election campaigns to ensure fairness, and transforms the Mediator of the Republic into the “Médiature de la République” with expanded powers.

A new provision grants the President and Prime Minister a “summer break” aimed at balancing executive responsibilities, while members of the government will now face ordinary courts for economic and financial crimes committed in office.

According to Neloum Mbaigoto, chair of the Special Commission that reviewed the text, the changes are designed to improve administrative efficiency and institutional flexibility.

The reform, which amends the Constitution adopted in December 2023, will take effect once it is promulgated.
