Flooding in Mali Claims 21 Lives, Hundreds of Homes Destroyed

The death toll from flooding in Mali has climbed to 21, with 33 people injured and 495 houses destroyed, according to the Interministerial Committee for Crisis and Disaster Management.

The update, released by the Ministry of Security and Civil Protection, said the disasters were triggered by heavy rainfall, lightning, and strong winds between August 4 and 11.

Since the start of the rainy season in June, authorities have recorded 31 floods, five lightning strikes, and four cases of strong winds, affecting 803 households — nearly 9,200 people.

The committee warned that rainfall and storm activity are expected to intensify across much of the country, excluding the far north.

Authorities said anticipatory measures are underway, including reinforcing rapid response units, pre-positioning emergency supplies, and mobilizing citizen volunteers.

In 2024, floods in Mali claimed 76 lives and injured 148, with more than 259,000 people affected nationwide.
