Gambia Moves Closer to Justice for Jammeh-Era Crimes with Special Tribunal Plans

Gambia is set to establish a special tribunal to try serious crimes committed during the Yahya Jammeh regime from 1994 to 2016, as identified by the Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC).

A recent meeting organized by the Ministry of Justice and the Gambia Bar Association brought together legal experts, transitional justice specialists, and civil society actors to discuss the ECOWAS-adopted legal framework.

The new structure includes the SAM Act, the Office of the Special Prosecutor, a Special Criminal Division within the High Court, and a Special Tribunal for International Crimes.

Discussions emphasized the independence of the Tribunal, victim involvement, witness protection, transparency, and resource mobilization.

Officials reaffirmed the government’s commitment to implementing the tribunal, with final appointments to key positions expected soon.

The move has been widely seen across the sub region as a significant step toward ending impunity and strengthening justice in Gambia, gaining international recognition for its efforts in transitional justice.
